  1. READ

    Philippians 3, 4; 2 Corinthians 1:3-11
  2. CONNECT

    10min
In today's world, anxiety and depression are pervasive issues affecting many people, even those with a strong commitment to Christ. When circumstances are difficult and the future seems bleak, it can be challenging to continue faithfully living out the faith we profess. The apostle Paul knew firsthand what it was to feel like suffering is almost too much to bear. His life and his teaching provide wisdom and encouragement as we weather life's ups and downs.
  3. Reflection

What was a deep fear you had as a child? Did someone help you confront that fear? If so, who was that person, and what actions did they take to help you?
  4. WATCH

    20min
  5. DISCUSS

    15min
    1. What stood out to you the most from the video?
    2. In what ways does the picture of Paul presented in this video align with your picture of him? Does it differ or present a broader picture of him in any specific ways? If so, what ways?
    3. How does humility before God help us persevere in righteous living and faith?
    4. How does optimism born out of faith in God help us persevere in righteous living and faith?
    5. How does a mindset of joy help us persevere in righteous living and faith?
    6. Of the following: humility before God; optimism born out of faith in God; and a mindset of joy; which comes more naturally to you? Which is more challenging?
  6. APPLY

    15min
    1. Read Philippians 1:19-24. In what ways do Paul’s motivations for living and for dying differ from yours? How does that challenge or encourage you?
    2. In many places in his letters, Paul reveals what he did to persevere and not lose heart. Identify some of those things in the following passages.
      1. 2 Corinthians 1:8-11
      2. 2 Corinthians 4:15-18
      3. Philippians 4:4-7
      4. Philippians 4:8-9
    3. Which of these is God nudging you to include more of in your life? What is one thing you can do towards that end?
  7. CHALLENGE

    1. Paul said his “eager expectation and hope” was that he would not be “at all ashamed” but have “full courage” to honor Christ in his body.
      1. In what circumstances do you need full courage to bring honor to Christ and make him known?
      2. In what circumstances do you run the risk of doing something to bring shame to Christ?
    2. Again and again, the apostle Paul asked people to pray for him and thanked them for God’s answers to their prayers. Who can you ask to pray for you so that you can honor God and avoid dishonoring him?
Finish with a time of prayer.
